The specialist argument is why a manufacturing specialist broker. About Jason Taken is the identity page. How it works is the sequence. This page scores the three channels sellers actually confuse.

Census CBP 2023 counted 284,452 manufacturing establishments; 68.4% have fewer than 20 employees (Source: Census CBP). Most of those files need a brokered sequence more than they need a forty-page auction book.

What size band does each channel actually finish?

Main Street manufacturing in BizBuySell’s 2021–2025 set cleared at 2.75x median SDE on about $268k of discretionary earnings (Source: BizBuySell / Iconic). That room is an individual and SBA room. A business broker who already speaks 7(a) — $5 million cap, 10% injection, standby-note rules (Source: SBA) — belongs there.

An investment bank belongs when enterprise value, diligence cost, and the buyer set actually need that channel. This site will not invent a cutoff dollar to flatter either side. It will say a $400k-SDE quote desk is not an IB file. Stanford’s 2024–25 search median of about $16 million at ~6.2x EBITDA on a ~25% margin profile is a study neighborhood, not a reason to hire a pitch-book team for a job shop (Source: Stanford GSB).

FSBO can finish a simple, local, un-concentrated shop when the owner can staff both desks. It fails when the file is a 32% customer, a lapsed certificate, or a machine list with no lien column.

How does confidentiality differ?

Selling confidentially is the long form. A brokered process blinds the teaser, stages the CIM, and keeps unique facade photos out. A competitor already in the book has leakage and leverage in the same sentence.

An investment-bank process still has associates, printers, and a wider staff. It is controlled. It is not invisible. Use it when the EV justifies the footprint.

FSBO is a rumor machine unless you are unusually disciplined. The local operator talks at the diner. The estimator hears “we’re selling” from a buyer who toured in a branded fleece. You cannot take back a public listing.

What work product are you actually buying?

A manufacturing specialist broker sells the peg definition — raw, WIP, finished, consigned, customer-owned tools — and a machine list a lender can underwrite. Sell my manufacturing business is the seller tree. Buyer types is the parallel-room argument. IBBA Pulse Q1 2026 found 83% of deals over $5 million drew three or more offers (Source: IBBA). That is an argument for a process. It is not a promised bid count on a thin SDE shop.

An investment bank sells a formal bake-off at a scale that can pay for it. Do not hire that product to feel serious on a file that will close with one operator and a preferred lender.

FSBO sells your nights. You will still need counsel, a CPA, and often an appraiser. Business-broker licensing by state is the reminder that some states care who is paid to broker a sale. Confirm locally.

How does the calendar punish the wrong channel?

BizBuySell’s 2025 manufacturing median close ran 223 days (Source: BizBuySell). A mismatched IB retainer on a Main Street shop burns that calendar on a product that cannot clear the file. A FSBO flyer that leaks in week two burns it on a rebid.

Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute still flag 3.8 million manufacturing hires needed this decade, with 1.9 million potentially unfilled (Source: Deloitte/MI). An owner who is also the quote desk cannot also be the full-time process manager. That is why FSBO fails on owner-dependent shops even when the math looks simple.

BLS OEWS May 2025 median pay — machinist $58,750, welder $53,750 — belongs in the replacement-cost memo whoever runs the process (Source: BLS OEWS). The channel does not hire the second shift.

Who should choose a business broker?

Choose a broker when the plant is asset-heavy, concentration-exposed, or certificate-gated, and when the likely room is operators, SBA, searchers, and some add-ons. Choose a manufacturing specialist when the peg is a WIP problem and the iron has a floor. Choose Jason Taken’s lane when you want that sequence without a fake phone number or a costume IB.

Refuse a broker who blends Main Street SDE with a larger-EV sponsor print and calls the blend “the market.” Refuse anyone who will list your town and your hero customer on page one.

Who should choose an investment bank?

Choose an IB when enterprise value, buyer set, and diligence cost actually match that channel — and when counsel agrees the securities and advisory facts are in the right lane. Choose it for a formal auction you can staff.

Refuse an IB because a neighbor used the phrase, or because you want a 40-page book on a shop that lives in the 2.75x SDE gravity well. Jason Taken will not pretend to be that channel.

Who should choose FSBO?

Choose FSBO if the file is simple, local, un-concentrated, and you can run Monday and the sale without leaking the book. Choose it if you already have one serious buyer and counsel is already in the room — and you accept that you gave up a parallel process.

Refuse FSBO if you need a blind teaser, if a competitor already buys from you, or if you will learn 7(a) standby rules in week ten. Hire the channel that already knows the box.

Illinois owners who want the registration fact can read the Secretary of State Business Brokers Act page. Other states differ. Broker licensing by state is the briefing. This compare page is the channel choice, not the license table.
