Most of those establishments are small. Most of the hubs below still have a Main Street SDE band and a larger EBITDA band. Do not blend them.

Every hub uses the same spine: how the process makes money, how it is valued by size band, who buys it, what diligence is unique, how to sell it without a rumor, how to buy it without borrowing another sector’s multiple, and two illustrative cases. Each hub has three transaction pages — sell, buy, and valuation. Due-diligence and buyers-and-multiples subpages can wait.

How to use the table on each hub

The cells are broker synthesis from the research file: BizBuySell’s manufacturing SDE set (median 2.75x, 2021–2025), GF Data’s larger-EV EBITDA series, Stanford’s search-fund median, and sub-sector access gates (certificates, tooling ownership, environmental cost). They are not quotes.

If OLV plus NWC exceeds earnings value, the hub will say so. That sentence matters more than a headline multiple.

Buyer types still sit on top of process

A PE add-on looking at medical molding is not the same conversation as an SBA operator looking at a twelve-person millwork room. Read buyer types after you pick a process.

What this index will not do

It will not publish listings. It will not invent city-level inventory. It will not give a single manufacturing multiple. State and city pages come later; nationwide rules still apply until they do.

How a hub is built

Each hub opens with a direct answer, then a size-band table that refuses to blend Main Street SDE with lower-middle-market EBITDA. The money section names the process: what the customer actually pays for, what the hidden P&L is, and what a broker rule-of-thumb margin looks like when it is labeled as such. The buyer section names who clears that file. The diligence section is the access gate — certificate, tool ownership, environmental, scorecard, or installed base. Sell and buy sections do not repeat the pillar pages; they apply the sequence to this floor.

Each hub opens into a sell page, a buy page, and a valuation page. For the long national method, use sell, buy, and valuation.

Working capital is not a retailer peg

Every hub assumes the same failure mode: an LOI that copies AR plus inventory minus AP from a store. Manufacturers have raw, WIP, finished, consigned inputs, customer-owned tools, unbilled projects, and E&O. The hub will tell you which of those classes blows up that process. Write the method into the letter. Buyers who refuse a physical are telling you the earnings story is the only story they want.

Climate and labor belong in the CIM, not in the multiple

ISM Manufacturing PMI was 54.6 in August 2026 with a Prices Index of 71.1 (Source: ISM). Fed G.17 manufacturing capacity utilization was 76.0% in July 2026 (Source: Fed G.17). BLS reported manufacturing payroll employment up 16,000 in August 2026 (Source: BLS CES). Deloitte / Manufacturing Institute projected a net need of as many as 3.8 million manufacturing employees from 2024–2033, with up to 1.9 million unfilled if the skills gap holds (Source: Deloitte/MI, 2024). Those series describe the year a buyer will operate. They do not authorize a made-up 2026 cell.

What “nationwide” does not erase

Nationwide intake does not erase a New Jersey ISRA clock, a California successor sales-tax clearance, or a New York mini-WARN analysis. The 50-state briefing table lives in research. Real property still needs a properly licensed real-estate broker for that piece. BLS OEWS May 2025 national machinist median pay was $58,750 and welder median pay was $53,750 (Source: BLS OEWS). Your metro will differ. The CIM should use the plant’s burdened labor.

SBA 7(a) still publishes a $5 million maximum, 85/75 guaranty, and SOP 50 10 8 injection rules (Source: SBA). 504 still exists for the plant and the heavy iron — $5 million standard, $5.5 million for a qualifying small-manufacturer project (Source: SBA / 13 CFR). None of those products will save a file whose job-cost system cannot produce a concentration schedule.

How to pick a hub without guessing

If the access gate is a 5-axis cell and a job-cost file, start at CNC. If it is a brake, laser, or press, start at fabrication. If it is a mold and a resin surcharge, start at plastics. If it is an SMT or harness book, start at electronics. If it is AS9100 or NADCAP, start at aerospace. If it is ISO 13485 or an FDA listing, start at medical. If it is IATF and releases, start at automotive. If it is SQF and code dates, start at food. If it is converting versus commodity print, start at packaging. If it is cabinets or millwork, start at wood. If it is a formula and a tank farm, start at chemicals. If it is EDM and a designer bench, start at tooling. If it is specified architectural product, start at building products. If it is a spec (FR, medical, industrial) on a sewn line, start at textiles. If it is an installed base and aftermarket parts, start at machinery OEMs.

Mixed plants pick the gate that holds the book. A molder with ISO 13485 is a medical conversation that happens to use presses. A job shop with a lapsed AS9100 is a machining conversation that used to be aero.

Census CBP 2023 still counts 284,452 manufacturing establishments (Source: Census CBP, 2023). Most files that arrive here are small. That is allowed. It is not a reason to borrow a lower-middle-market cell.
