Firm versus cancellable
A firm order with cancellation cost is one noun. A blanket with at-will releases is another. A CIM that labels both “backlog” is selling hope. Customer concentration can sit underneath either pile. Capacity utilization tells you whether the floor can actually ship it.
ISM’s August 2026 Manufacturing PMI printed 54.6 (Source: Industry Today / ISM). A rising PMI can swell bookings. It does not make a cancellable release firm.
Ask whether the open-order file includes safety stock releases that the customer can kill on Friday. Ask whether price escalation sits in the contract or only in the hope. Ask whether the margin on the oldest 20 percent of the pile still matches the quote. A large backlog of underquoted work is a late file. Capacity that cannot ship it is a late file wearing a utilization hat.
