What actually moves CNC value in a deal?

Control generation. Axes and probing. Pallet and lights-out options. Spindle hours and crash history. Brand is a secondary read; condition and support are first. A rebuilt 2006 horizontal with a current control can out-earn a neglected 2018 vertical. The equipment guide is the list format. M&E standards attach OLV, FMV, or FLV.

The CNC hub is the process page. The going-concern cell for a general job shop under $1 million of SDE is 2.0x–3.6x. Specialty certified work still under $1 million of SDE can print 3.0x–5.0x. At $1–3 million of adjusted EBITDA the precision-machining column is 5.0x–6.5x. Iron does not move those rows by itself. It feeds the age and capex chip and the asset-floor test.

Useful-life language here is broker/appraiser practice from /research/operations-equipment.md. Confirm with the appraiser’s written remaining life. Do not treat a blog sentence as a depreciation schedule.

How should buyers read control generation and 5-axis?

Recent controls hold resale better because support, probing cycles, and operators still exist. Older 0/18i generations still run; parts and talent thin over time. Five-axis and mill-turn cells are scarcer in a Main Street list and often hold OLV better — when they are staffed. A 5-axis that only the owner can program is owner dependence welded to a pretty machine.

BLS OEWS May 2025: CNC tool programmers $68,120, CNC operators $50,690, machinists $58,750 (Source: BLS). Deloitte / Manufacturing Institute: up to 1.9 million manufacturing roles potentially unfilled 2024–2033 (Source: Deloitte / MI). A late-model cell without a programmer is not a late-model going concern.

EDM (wire / sinker) is a cousin: hours, filtration, and power-supply condition matter. Mitsubishi, Sodick, and Makino names show up often; condition still wins.

When does CNC OLV beat the earnings cell?

On tired owner-operated shops. BizBuySell manufacturing median SDE is about $268,321 at 2.75x (2021–2025 set; Source: Iconic recap). That earnings value is easy for a decent late-model list to beat on written OLV. Commission the appraisal if the floor might win. Do not publish a homemade “retail replacement” number.

Fed G.17 utilization 76.0% (July 2026; Source: Fed G.17) is national climate. A bay of idle horizontals will not appraise like a two-shift cell farm. Mark spares as spares.

What this page will not do

It will not invent a remaining-life table by model year. It will not quote auction results it does not have. It will not treat automation in a crate as useful life already consumed. It will not move a job shop into the aerospace 6.0x–8.0x $1–3M EBITDA cell because one mill has a 4th axis.

ISM August 2026 PMI 54.6 (Source: ISM) does not re-rate a control. Census CBP’s 68.4% of shops under 20 employees (Source: Census) explains why so many CNC files are SDE files with iron-heavy floors.

Buyers: buy a manufacturing business. Sellers: sell my manufacturing business. The valuation pillar keeps the cells. Jason Taken is a business broker. Educational information only. Not an appraisal and not a dealer quote. No value is guaranteed.

How a buyer should score a cell in thirty minutes

Read the control generation and the options plate. Ask for the last ball-bar or laser compensation. Ask for spindle hours and the last rebuild. Ask whether probing is used or just installed. Ask who wrote the last five programs. Ask whether those programs are backed up off the control and off the owner’s laptop.

Then ask whether the cell is in the quoted capacity. A pretty 5-axis used for show-and-tell is not a capacity asset. It may still have OLV. Price it as iron, not as earnings.

If the shop is mostly manuals plus one hero mill, write the mix on the first page of notes. Do not let the photo of the hero mill become the file. Metal fab cousins do the same thing with one fiber laser and a bay of tired brakes.

Programming risk is a useful-life risk

A control that only one person understands has a shorter going-concern life than the frame suggests. The next programmer may want a different control. BLS May 2025 programmer median $68,120 is a national marker. In a tight metro the package is higher. Deloitte / MI’s unfilled-role estimate is the climate. Budget the hire inside the owner-dependence conversation.

CAM seats, post processors, and tool libraries belong on the list next to the iron. A cell without its posts is a longer restart. Buyers who skip the IT closet overpay for steel.

What remaining-life language should never do

It should never become a homemade price. It should never contradict a written appraisal. It should never assume a 2014 VF-4SS without a sourced comp. It should never treat a crashed and unrepaired machine as “2014 value.” It should never move a job shop into the aerospace 6.0x–8.0x $1–3M cell because the control is new.

If you need a number for a lender, hire the appraiser. If you need a marketed range, use the CNC hub and the valuation calculator for the earnings cell, then chip cash for condition. That is the whole method.

EDM, grinders, and CMM sit in the same diligence pattern: hours, filtration or ways, calibration, software seats. They are not priced on this page. They are asked about on this page.

How a lender walk differs from a going-concern walk on the same bay

The lender wants serials, liens, condition, and a standard they can sell if the note fails, often OLV. The going-concern buyer wants programs, posts, probing, who can run lights-out, and whether the cell is in the quoted capacity. Walk both agendas or you will answer the wrong questions well.

On the lender walk, mark leased machines before anyone falls in love with them. Mark customer-owned fixtures. Mark the landlord crane. Those items leave the collateral stack. On the buyer walk, mark the control the only programmer understands. That item leaves the easy going-concern stack.

Do not quote a 2014 vertical on either walk. Useful-life notes on this site are practice color. They are not a dealer catalog. If someone needs a number, they need an appraiser and a sourced comp. If someone needs a marketed range, they need the CNC size-band cell and a cash chip for condition.

A bay of manuals plus one hero 5-axis is a mix. Write the mix on the first page. Photos of the hero mill have wrecked more Main Street processes than they have helped. The same is true of a pallet pool that has never run a second shift. Hours decide. Tags do not.

A thirty-minute cell score that does not become a homemade price

Control generation and options plate. Last compensation. Spindle hours and last rebuild. Probing used or only installed. Who wrote the last five programs. Where those programs live. In quoted capacity or show-and-tell. Write those seven lines. Then stop. Do not turn them into a 2014 vertical asking price. Practice notes are not a catalog. Lenders want OLV-capable serials and liens. Going-concern buyers want posts, lights-out ritual, and a backup programmer.

A mix of manuals plus one hero mill is a mix. Write it on page one. A pallet pool that never ran second shift is hours, not a slogan. CAM seats and posts belong next to the iron. A control only one person understands has a shorter going-concern life than the frame. Budget the hire. Do not move the file into an aerospace cell because the control is new.

A closer read on cell score

Seven lines: control and options, last compensation, hours and last rebuild, probing used or only installed, who wrote the last five programs, where those programs live, in-capacity or show-and-tell. Then stop. Do not invent an asking price for a named 2014 vertical. Lenders want serials, liens, and a standard they can sell. Going-concern buyers want posts, lights-out ritual, and a backup programmer. A mix of manuals plus one hero mill is a mix. Write it on page one. A pallet pool that never ran second shift is hours, not a slogan. A control only one person understands has a shorter going-concern life than the frame. Budget the hire. Do not move the file into an aerospace cell because the control is new.

Why a control only one person understands shortens going-concern life

A frame can outlive a control. A control can outlive the only person who can back it up. Useful life in a going-concern sale is the shorter of those stories. Budget the hire or the training. Do not move the file into an aerospace cell because the control is new. Do not invent an asking price for a named 2014 vertical. Lenders want serials, liens, and a standard they can sell. Going-concern buyers want posts, a lights-out ritual that actually happened, and a backup programmer.

A mix of manuals plus one hero mill is a mix. Write it on page one of the list. A pallet pool that never ran second shift is hours, not a slogan. Remaining-life language in a CIM should match the machinery report or should not appear.
