Do St. Louis and Kansas City share one buyer list?

No. Aerospace and defense in St. Louis, food and auto in Kansas City, chemicals, and fabricated metal are different books. A statewide teaser is how the other metro hears. Use the city page that matches the plant. Name Springfield, Columbia, or Joplin as a region, not as a third “metro multiple.”

If the plant sits in St. Louis, use sell a manufacturing business in St. Louis. If it sits in Kansas City, use sell a manufacturing business in Kansas City. This site treats Kansas City as a Missouri page. If the deed is actually on the Kansas side, say that to counsel before anyone writes the engagement. Springfield, Columbia, and Joplin stay regions in the teaser.

Aerospace in St. Louis, food and auto in Kansas City

People who sell a manufacturing business in Missouri usually sit in aerospace and defense, food, auto, chemicals, or fabricated metal. Sub-sector hubs keep those packets from mixing. A St. Louis aerospace book and a Kansas City food plant share the statewide count. They do not share certificates, slots, or a buyer list.

Name the process. Leave the bay door out of the first sentence. An aerospace quality clerk in St. Charles and a slotting manager on the Missouri side of Kansas City can hear before your own floor does. That is the two-path leak. It is not a reason to invent a statewide premium.

How large is Missouri manufacturing?

The Census County Business Patterns, 2023 file ranked Missouri eighteenth with 5,460 manufacturing shops and 283,563 people on the payroll. That is about 51.9 employees per location. 65.9% of the shops have fewer than twenty employees, a bit below the national 68.4% on 284,452 U.S. plants. About 1.52% have 500 or more employees.

Eighteenth place is a sourcing fact. It is not a two-metro quote. A 51.9-person average is a mid-to-heavy shop with a second chair and enough people for a rumor. Most files still price on seller discretionary earnings once a replacement wage is named. The 1.52% large-plant tail can sit closer to federal WARN.

Five thousand shops look busy. They still leak through one buyer in the other city. Do not write the teaser as if every file is a St. Louis aerospace plant, and do not write it as if Kansas City food is the same book.

Do you need a Missouri business-broker license?

Missouri does not show a dedicated business-broker license rule in the compilations we checked. Counsel still reads the engagement, especially if the Kansas City deed sits on the Kansas side. Compare states on business-broker licensing by state. Jason Taken is a business broker. The building still needs a real-estate card.

A missing dedicated rule does not raise a St. Louis or Kansas City price. It also does not retire the real-estate card when a Springfield plant moves. The Kansas-side deed question is a counsel question, not a slogan.

Missouri has no New Jersey-style transfer act. That is not a pass on All Appropriate Inquiries (Source: EPA / 40 C.F.R. Part 312). Start with ASTM E1527-21. Pieces of the Phase I generally need a refresh after 180 days. Chemicals, coatings, and food still go to Phase I and, if needed, Phase II.

Missouri does not add a state mini-WARN clock in the lists we checked. Federal WARN can still attach at 100 full-time people and 60 days (29 U.S.C. § 2101). WARN is the federal page. A 51-person shop often sits under it. The 1.52 percent tail may not.

Sales tax on machinery is often a manufacturing-equipment exemption or an occasional-sale question. Successor tax is fact-dependent. A Missouri CPA writes those sentences. HedgeStone will not.

How do you keep the two metros from talking to each other?

How it works keeps the plant unnamed until the NDA, then opens a staged room, then scripts the visit. Aerospace leaks through a St. Louis quality clerk. Food leaks through a Kansas City slot. Auto leaks through a program buyer. Chemicals leak through a turnaround planner. Metal leaks through coatings. Call the region St. Louis metro, Kansas City (Missouri side), Springfield, Columbia, or Joplin. Do not put a bay-door street in the first sentence.

A public marketplace makes screenshots that travel I-70 faster than you do. On a 5,460-shop map the default is a controlled list. The 1.52% large-plant tail does not make a listing safer.

The floor hears late, on a planned day, with a script. A buyer in the other metro can hear first. That is why the teaser names one region, not “Missouri manufacturing.” A supervisor on a 51-person shift may need a stay conversation before a tour.

Manufacturing business valuation does not get a two-metro edition. BizBuySell still prints a 2.75x manufacturing SDE median on about $268k discretionary earnings and a 223-day median close. Use 223 days to plan. Do not promise St. Charles. An aerospace book with reportable EBITDA does not belong in the SDE room.

Kansas City food that needs SBA 7(a) still faces a $5 million ceiling. SOP 50 10 8 still asks for a 10% injection. Standby paper can cover only half of that injection, and only for the life of the loan. Say so before anyone drives to the northland.

IBBA’s Q1 2026 Market Pulse said 83% of deals over $5 million drew three or more offers. On an eighteenth-place map with two live metros, that pattern can appear on a larger aerospace or auto file. It does not promise bids on a $250k-SDE Columbia shop. Buyer types recast differently: operators to SDE, aerospace add-ons to EBITDA, food buyers to the slot. No firm names here.

What has to be ready before anyone tours either metro?

Write unfinished jobs, certificate holds, and food holds as their own classes in the working-capital peg before exclusivity. A retailer peg dropped into an aerospace letter will invent a fight after the wire.

The complete guide to selling a manufacturing business is the national sequence. Missouri only adds shop size, license posture, and two live city pages.

BLS OEWS May 2025 still prints a national machinist median of $58,750 and a welder median of $53,750. Those figures are not a two-metro wage series. If nobody can quote Independence work after the owner leaves, the file is not tour-ready.

Keep aerospace quality systems, Kansas City food holds, auto program clocks, chemical permits, and metal coatings in separate rooms. The 283,563 people on Missouri manufacturing payrolls do not collapse those books into one story.

Below-market rent on a St. Louis or Kansas City related-party lease is a gift to the first offer. Reset the recast. Confirm the engagement. Hire a real-estate broker if a Springfield building actually transfers. If the Kansas City deed is on the Kansas side, say that before the letter goes out.

ISM at 54.6 in August 2026 and Fed G.17 utilization at 76.0% in July 2026 describe the year, not a two-metro add-on. Put Columbia or Joplin in the second sentence. A bay-door street is how the other city hears.

Form 8594 and IRC § 1060 still split equipment, goodwill, and the building. A Missouri CPA writes the machinery-tax and successor-tax lines. Jason Taken is a business broker. Counsel reads the license question, the Phase I, and which state holds the deed. Nobody here promises a close week.

If one owner still releases every traveler, stop calling the memo a 51-person plant. Name the second chair before anyone talks discretionary earnings. A tourist who wants “any shop between the two cities” is not a buyer list. Eighteenth in the Census file does not fix that.

The matching door is buy a manufacturing business in Missouri. Book a confidential intro call when the recast and the two-metro leak plan can travel without naming the bay. Census rank maps the state. It does not price a St. Louis or Kansas City shop.
