How small is New Mexico manufacturing?
The latest Census County Business Patterns file — 2023, released in 2025 — counted 1,266 New Mexico manufacturing establishments. That ranked forty-first among the states. Those shops employed 28,044 people, about 22.2 per location. 79.9% have fewer than twenty employees, well above the national 68.4% on 284,452 U.S. plants. About 0.32% have 500 or more employees (Source: Census CBP).
Those numbers describe a map of small shops. They do not tell you what your company is worth. An Albuquerque electronics shop and a Las Cruces food plant sit in the same statewide count. They do not share customers, certificates, or a buyer list.
Owners who sell a manufacturing business here usually sit in electronics and labs-adjacent work, food, fabricated metal, or other small shops. Name the process. Sub-sector hubs keep those diligence packets apart.
Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, and Farmington are regions we name in a confidential teaser. They do not get their own pages here. A lab customer can still hear about an Albuquerque file before any listing appears. A neighbor with express real-estate coverage of business opportunities is sell a manufacturing business in Arizona. Do not copy Arizona’s wording onto a Santa Fe engagement. A mountain neighbor is sell a manufacturing business in Colorado.
| Shop size | How a sale usually leaks | What forty-first place does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than twenty people | Through a lab, mill, or spouse | Raise the multiple |
| Near the 22.2-person average | Through the second chair’s customer | Invent a campus |
| The thin 0.32% large-plant tail | Through a plant-gate rumor | Make a public listing safe |
License and notice without extra clocks
No dedicated New Mexico business-broker license showed up in the compilations we checked. Counsel still reads the engagement. Jason Taken is a business broker. When a Rio Rancho building transfers, a licensed real-estate broker handles that piece. See business-broker licensing by state.
This state does not add its own mini-WARN clock in the layoff-notice lists we checked. Federal WARN can still apply at 100 full-time employees and 60 days (29 U.S.C. § 2101). A 22.2-person average shop usually sits under that federal test. Employment counsel still reads the actual headcount. WARN is the federal notice page.
No New Mexico transfer act sits on this file. A 22-person shop still needs All Appropriate Inquiries if the land or a wet process is in the deal (Source: EPA / 40 C.F.R. Part 312). Electronics, food chemistry, and metal coatings go to Phase I and, if needed, Phase II under ASTM E1527-21. Reports age. A small shop is not a reason to skip the study.
Sales tax on machinery and successor tax are fact-dependent here. A New Mexico CPA writes those sentences. HedgeStone will not.
How do you sell without the lab customer finding out?
How it works is the sequence: an unnamed teaser, an NDA, a staged data room, then a scripted visit. Electronics files leak through a lab buyer. Food files leak through a slot. Metal files leak through a ranch or mine account. Name a region — central New Mexico electronics, southern food, northwest metal — not a clean-room door. Skip a customer-audit week.
Public marketplaces create inbound and screenshots. On a map where most shops have fewer than twenty people, the default is a controlled list. Employees hear on a planned day, usually late, with a script.
Searchers who want SBA 7(a) financing still face a $5 million cap and a 10% buyer injection under SOP 50 10 8. Most New Mexico files will live in seller discretionary earnings rooms, not in that $5 million box. If a Las Cruces food company cannot live in either room honestly, say so before anyone tours Farmington.
A 22.2-person average also changes the SBA conversation. Searchers who want SBA 7(a) still face a $5 million cap and a 10% buyer injection under SOP 50 10 8. Most of the 1,266 shops will never live in that box. They live in seller discretionary earnings. Name the replacement wage for the person who actually runs the chair. If that person is the owner and no second chair exists, say so before anyone drives to Las Cruces.
What is a New Mexico plant worth?
Manufacturing business valuation stays national. After the size question is honest, BizBuySell still shows a 2.75x manufacturing SDE median on about $268k discretionary earnings. The same review’s 223-day median is a planning number, not a Santa Fe promise. A shop that still depends on one owner to quote every job does not become “a 22-person plant” in the offering memo just because Census printed 22.2.
| File that walks in | Earnings language allowed | What an Albuquerque address does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Owner still quotes every Rio Rancho job | SDE after a named replacement wage | Raise the multiple |
| A real second chair already runs the floor | Adjusted EBITDA in national bands | Turn 1,266 shops into a bid |
| Used iron plus cleaned working capital beats earnings | Orderly liquidation | Repair tired presses in Farmington |
IBBA Q1 2026 found 83% of deals over $5 million drew three or more offers. On a state this small-shop heavy, that pattern is rare. It is not a bid promise on a $250k-SDE Santa Fe shop. Buyer types recast differently: operators to SDE, electronics add-ons to EBITDA, food buyers to the slot. This page will not name firms.
What has to be packed before anyone tours Las Cruces?
Unfinished jobs and food holds need separate classes in the working-capital peg before exclusivity. Copy a retailer peg into an Albuquerque electronics letter and the true-up will invent a fight after the wire.
The complete guide to selling a manufacturing business is the national sequence. This page only adds New Mexico shop-size, leak, and license facts.
| Packet | Ready looks like | New Mexico wrinkle |
|---|---|---|
| Recast | Three years, year-to-date, add-backs documented | Replacement wage for the person who actually runs the 22-person chair |
| Concentration | Trailing twelve and thirty-six months, names later | Lab and slot names wait for the NDA |
| Quality | Electronics or food certificates current | Access gate, not a logo |
| Equipment | Serial numbers and liens | Floor test versus a hoped-for multiple |
| Working capital | Classes written before exclusivity | Las Cruces unfinished jobs are not a surprise |
| License | Counsel reads the engagement | No dedicated rule widely cited; building still needs a real-estate broker |
| Notice | Temps counted in the headcount | Federal 100 / 60; no extra New Mexico mini-WARN in the lists we checked |
National wage prints from BLS OEWS May 2025 — machinist $58,750, welder $53,750 — stay national. They are not an Albuquerque wage series. If the file cannot name who quotes Santa Fe work when the owner is gone, it is not ready for a tour.
Electronics hide quality systems. Food hides code dates. Fabricated metal hides coatings. Labs-adjacent shops hide one customer. Write those packets separately. The 28,044-employee count does not turn them into one “New Mexico manufacturing” story.
Below-market related-party rent in Albuquerque or Santa Fe is a gift to the first offer. Put a market rent in the recast. The license question belongs on the engagement letter. It is not a reason to skip a real-estate broker when a Rio Rancho building transfers.
August 2026 ISM at 54.6 and July 2026 Fed utilization at 76.0% describe the year. They do not become an Albuquerque electronics premium. Most of the 1,266 shops still have fewer than twenty people. Farmington and Las Cruces belong in the second sentence of a teaser, never in the first. On a 22.2-person average, a shop-door street address is a leak.
Form 8594 and IRC § 1060 still split equipment, goodwill, and the building. A New Mexico CPA writes the machinery-tax and successor-tax sentences. Jason Taken is a business broker, not that CPA. Counsel still confirms the license question. No Albuquerque close date is promised.
An Albuquerque electronics book that still depends on one owner to release every traveler is not “a 22-person plant” in the offering memo. Name the second chair before anyone talks seller discretionary earnings. If the only buyer who will tour wants “any New Mexico shop,” send them away. Forty-first place in the Census file does not repair that buyer list.
Labs-adjacent electronics files leak through a single customer faster than a food plant leaks through a slot. Name central New Mexico as the region. Keep the lab door out of the first sentence. Las Cruces food and Farmington metal need their own packets. The 79.9% small-shop map is why a controlled list is the default, not a public marketplace screenshot.
Arizona next door treats business opportunities as real-estate brokerage more clearly than New Mexico does. Do not copy that wording onto a Santa Fe engagement. Colorado is a different mountain map. Counsel confirms New Mexico on the file you have.
The other door is buy a manufacturing business in New Mexico. Book a confidential intro call when the recast and the leak plan can travel. Forty-first place in the Census file describes the map. It is not an Albuquerque multiple.
