Why does sub-sector sit next to size?
Census CBP 2023 counts 284,452 manufacturing establishments; 68.4% have fewer than 20 employees (Source: Census). That distribution is why Main Street SDE files dominate the public listing sites and why lower-middle-market EBITDA files live in a different buyer set. It is not a reason to average a textile sew house with a chemicals and coatings blender.
Certificates and customer qualification create scarcity. AS9100 and ISO 13485 are access gates. IATF 16949 is an access gate with more OEM leverage. ISO 9001 is common and rarely enough, by itself, to jump a row. SQF and sister GFSI schemes gate food. How quality certifications affect value is the diligence page. This page is the row map.
BizBuySell’s 2021–2025 manufacturing recap prints a 2.75x median SDE multiple across a mixed-process Main Street set (Source: Iconic recap). Use that median as climate for owner-operated shops. Do not give it to an aerospace supplier at $6 million of adjusted EBITDA, and do not withhold the certified SDE premium from a tiny medical component shop that still belongs in the SDE column.
Which processes clear the higher cells?
Aerospace and medical occupy the high cells on this site’s synthesized table because the buyer cannot easily recreate customer approval. The published EBITDA cells for those rows are 6.0x–8.0x at $1–3M, 6.5x–9.0x at $3–10M, and 7.0x–11.0x at $10M+ of adjusted EBITDA. The SDE-under-$1M specialty cell is 3.0x–5.0x SDE. Those figures are advisor-survey and reported-deal ranges, not an appraisal.
Precision machining, plastics (injection, extrusion, thermoform), specialty packaging, tooling and dies, and many machinery OEMs sit in the middle family. Their $1–3M EBITDA cell on the three-column research table is 5.0x–6.5x. Tooling ownership, aftermarket mix, and scientific-molding discipline move you inside the cell. A crate of robots does not.
Government and ITAR mix can support the high cells and add transfer friction in the same sentence — novation, DDTC notice, sometimes CFIUS. Premium and friction are not opposites. Price both.
Which processes sit in the discount cells?
Commodity metal fabrication, commodity stamping, commodity print, and many sewn-product shops sit lower because a competitor can stand up similar iron and bid the next release. The research table’s general-fab / print / commodity columns are 4.0x–5.5x at $1–3M EBITDA, 5.0x–6.5x at $3–10M, and 6.0x–8.0x at $10M+. The SDE-under-$1M cells are 2.0x–3.6x for general CNC and 2.0x–3.5x for commodity fab.
Automotive suppliers often rhyme with the discount family even when the plant is large, because release-based volume and OEM scorecards cap pricing power. Building products and wood / millwork inherit housing-cycle risk. None of those facts invent a new multiple. They pick a row and then a place inside the cell.

If a cell is used as a talking number, label it a range. GF Data’s 7.2x manufacturing average (Q1 2026 recap) is a larger-EV series. It does not overwrite the print row.
How do certificates interact with the row?
A current AS9100 or ISO 13485 audit can keep you in the high row. A lapsed audit drops you into a diligence problem: customers who required the certificate will not treat a verbal “we are recertifying” as access. NADCAP special processes are narrower still — the process, not the building, is what the prime approved.
ISO 9001 on a CNC shop supports cleanliness of the file. It does not move that shop into the medical column. IATF on an auto supplier is the price of admission to the program, not a medical-style scarcity premium.
Do not add “a turn for ISO” as a rule. Add access. If losing the certificate loses 40% of sales, you do not have a 40% customer. You have a certificate customer. Price that on customer concentration and on this row map together.
Can a commodity shop inherit an aerospace cell?
Only if the sales mix and the audits actually support it. A plant that is 12% aerospace and 88% commodity brake work is a mix, not an aerospace company. The CIM should show the split. The multiple should be a weighted conversation, not a borrowed headline.
The same rule applies in reverse. A medical device component house that lets ISO 13485 lapse does not keep the medical column because the website still says medical. Access is the product.
Start at the sub-sector index to name the process. Use multiples by size to name the column. Use the calculator if you want the same fence in one sitting. Sellers continue at sell my manufacturing business. Manufacturing valuation methods is the sequence if you are still choosing SDE, EBITDA, or the asset floor.
IBBA Pulse Q1 2026: 67% of advisors saw no material AI effect on value; 83% of deals over $5 million drew three or more offers (Source: IBBA). Those facts describe process climate. They do not merge print with medical.
How to label a mixed-process plant without stealing a row
Walk the sales file, not the website. If 70% of dollars are commodity brake work and 30% are AS9100 small parts, you have a mix. Show both rows. Do not put the entire enterprise value in the aerospace column because the lobby plaque says aerospace. A buyer will rebuild the mix from invoices in a week.
Tooling owned by the shop versus the customer can move a plastics file inside the plastics row. It does not move it into medical unless ISO 13485 and the customer gate are real. Aftermarket mix on a machinery OEM can support the high end of the OEM row. It does not borrow the medical column.
Chemicals and coatings with formula IP sit differently from a toll blender using the customer’s recipe. Same NAICS-ish hallway. Different scarcity. Put the distinction in the CIM before anyone argues a tenth.
What a generalist CIM gets wrong about rows
It averages. It uses “industrial manufacturing” as a row. It cites a 7x podcast next to a 12-person wood shop. It treats IATF as if it were ISO 13485. It treats ISO 9001 as if it were AS9100. It treats specialty packaging as if it were commodity print, or the reverse, depending on which brochure was closer.
IBBA Pulse Q1 2026 called manufacturing a steady LMM demand sector. Demand is not a row. Why a manufacturing specialist broker exists because generalists miss asset-heavy and certificate-gated files. The row map is how that miss shows up in a number.
Textiles and building products inherit import and housing-cycle risk. Those are row reasons. They are not a license to invent a 2026 “cycle multiple.” ISM PMI 54.6 is climate inside the row you already earned.
A short diligence script for confirming the row
Ask for the last surveillance audit, the top ten part numbers, and the process list. Ask which jobs die if the certificate dies. Ask which jobs a competent competitor could stand up in ninety days with similar iron. If the honest answer is “most of them,” you are in a commodity row. If the honest answer is “almost none, because of validation / Oasis / PPAP,” you may be in a scarce row — if the paper is current.
Then pick the size column. Then move inside the cell. Then test the floor. That is the whole map.
How to confirm a row with three exhibits before anyone cites a podcast
Last surveillance audit, top ten part numbers, process list. Ask which jobs die if the certificate dies. Ask which jobs a competent competitor could stand up in ninety days with similar iron. If the answer is most of them, you are in a commodity row. If the answer is almost none because of validation, Oasis, or PPAP, you may be in a scarce row if the paper is current.
A 70 percent commodity and 30 percent AS9100 mix is a mix. Show both rows. Tooling ownership moves you inside plastics. It does not create medical. Aftermarket mix moves you inside an OEM row. It does not create medical. Generalist CIMs average, cite 7x next to a 12-person wood shop, and treat IATF as ISO 13485. Demand is not a row. IBBA calling manufacturing a steady sector is climate, not a cell.

A three-exhibit row test you can finish in one sitting
Last surveillance audit. Top ten part numbers. Process list. Ask which jobs die if the certificate dies. Ask which jobs a competitor could stand up in ninety days with similar iron. Most of them means commodity row. Almost none because of validation, Oasis, or PPAP means scarce row if the paper is current. A 70 and 30 mix is a mix. Show both rows. Tooling ownership moves you inside plastics. Aftermarket mix moves you inside an OEM row. Neither creates medical. Generalist averages are how 7x lands on a 12-person wood shop. Demand is climate. It is not a row.
