The smallest CBP manufacturing base

Census CBP 2023 put Alaska at rank 50 with 576 establishments, a 20.0-person average, and a 0.52% 500+ share. The national file counted 284,452 establishments and 68.4% under 20. Alaska’s 86.5% under-20 share is the highest in that state table. Relocation honesty belongs here. Most operators will not move to Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, the Kenai Peninsula, or Mat-Su. If you will, say who runs the floor on Monday when a barge is late or a season peaks.

Frontier freight, weather, and seasonal labor belong in the model before the teaser. A buyer who prices an Anchorage shop like a suburban job shop will miss working capital and missed-ship penalties. A 20.0-person shop usually means the owner quotes and holds the customer. If you cannot replace that person in Fairbanks or on the Kenai, the teaser is a brochure. Buy a manufacturing business is the nationwide pillar. This page is the Alaska overlay.

Hawaii is the other water-and-staffing conversation — 723 shops and a 14.2-person average. Do not copy Honolulu barge math onto Kenai seafood, and do not copy Kenai seasonality onto Maui.

What buybox fits Alaska manufacturing?

Seafood, oilfield fab, or small metal — write the off-season operator. Name the process — seafood processing, oilfield fabrication, small metal, wood serving resource work — not “manufacturing.” Name SDE or EBITDA and the number. Name certificates you must have on day one. Name the highest top-customer share you will live with. Name whether you will lease the Anchorage or Kenai plant, buy it, or accept either. Name the capital path. Name whether you will live with seasonal labor and frontier freight.

HedgeStone will not send you every employer establishment in the 576-count file. Sub-sector hubs keep the search from becoming a radius dump of Anchorage. A seafood plant and an oilfield shop do not share a diligence packet because they share a flag.

Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, the Kenai Peninsula, and Mat-Su are where the 576-shop file sits on a map. This site has no city slugs. An Anchorage seafood season is not a Fairbanks oilfield multiple. Write whether you will live through the off-season, because most Lower 48 operators will not.

Does the license listing matter to a buyer?

The 2026 briefing table lists Alaska as a license state (Napkin). If the person being paid to market the 576-shop file required a license and did not have it, counsel should say so before you rely on the CIM. Do not invent a statute name. Do not treat the listing as a free pass because the shop is tiny.

Business-broker licensing is not only the seller’s problem. Conveying the plant still needs a licensed real-estate broker for the deed. Jason Taken is a business broker.

If you plan a reduction after close, put WARN on counsel’s calendar the week you say it. Federal WARN tests 100 or more full-time employees. On a 20.0-person average Alaska shop the federal test often will not attach. Seasonal seafood peaks can change the facts. The state mini-WARN cell is N. Do not invent a headcount.

Financing an Alaska acquisition

SBA 7(a) for manufacturing acquisitions is the product page. The box on this page is short.

Alaska’s 576-shop base still borrows published 7(a): $5 million max, 10% injection (SBA). An Anchorage note that pays every month is credit. Standby for the 7(a) life, half the 10%, or it does not count. A note that pays the Anchorage seller every month is credit, not equity.

504 can carry an Anchorage building. It cannot paper seafood-season working capital as a $15 million cash-out on a 20.0-person check inside a 576-shop base.

Diligence when the bay empties after the season

An Anchorage walk-through still waits on returns. How it works does not change because this is the smallest CBP manufacturing base — 576 shops, rank 50. Seafood, oilfield fabrication, small metal, and wood serving resource work hide different calendars. A Kenai processor and a Fairbanks fab shop do not share a packet. The 86.5% under-20 share is the highest in the state table.

Business-broker licensing already sits above. Confirm whether the person paid to market the 576-shop file needed a license and had it. Jason Taken is a business broker. The deed still needs a licensed real-estate broker.

Frontier dirt and wet process still need All Appropriate Inquiries (Source: EPA / 40 C.F.R. Part 312). Phase I and Phase II ESA is the ASTM E1527-21 work. Seafood wastewater and finishing are not exempt because the shop is remote. The transfer-act cell is N. Mat-Su is not a reason to skip the study.

Write the peg for the season you are actually buying. A 576-shop count does not turn seafood lots into retail inventory. QoE should rebuild job-cost against the return and a replacement wage on a 20.0-person shop. If the off-season empties the bay, that is earnings, not a story. If the rebuild kills the number, the price moves or you leave.

Form 8594 still allocates iron and intangibles. The buyer wants depreciable cells. The seller wants goodwill. Sales tax on M&E is F. An Alaska CPA owns the conveyance. Do not invent an exemption because the plant sits in Anchorage.

Stock or assets is counsel’s fork. Neither structure answers the Napkin license listing. Mini-WARN is N. Federal WARN still tests 100 full-time employees. Seasonal peaks can change the facts. Employment in the file is 11,521. The 0.52% 500+ share is small. If an Anchorage teaser implies a campus, ask for peak and off-season headcount in week one.

See the floor after the binder, and ask what it looks like in the off-season. Rank 50 does not quiet a drop-in.

Who else bids on the smallest CBP manufacturing base

Buyer types will not share your seasonality language. A strategic who wants seafood capacity will not pay that print for a 20.0-person shop that goes quiet after the run. A searcher who borrowed a services median will miss a resource-calendar book. Anyone who needs the 7(a) box will stop when enterprise value plus fees plus the peg will not fit.

Valuation stays on national bands. BizBuySell’s 2.75x SDE median is Main Street (Source: BizBuySell). It is not an Anchorage premium. IBBA Pulse Q1 2026: 83% of deals over $5 million drew three or more offers (Source: IBBA). Most 576-shop files never enter that room. Do not stretch past the published box because you flew in.

Jason Taken will write the buybox, cut “any Alaska manufacturer,” and source quietly. We will not invent listings. We will not hide off-season emptiness because the teaser photographed a full Kenai bay.

How should an Alaska buyer write the off-season into the peg?

Name inbound in transit, raw, WIP, finished, consigned, and seasonal packing materials. Write what the peg does when the run ends. Physical count at close. Cycle-count theater is how buyers overpay for rust in a Fairbanks cage. 504 occupancy is a fact — a building empty in the off-season is not an occupied plant story.

After the wire, run the shop you bought, not the shop in the July photo. Keep the person who can start the scarce job. Lock the accounts that still call in January. Count again. Say whether you will live in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, on the Kenai, or in Mat-Su. Most operators will not. A 20.0-person average does not run itself from the Lower 48.

The research file has no Alaska manufacturing wage table. National BLS OEWS May 2025 medians — machinist $58,750, welder $53,750 (Source: BLS) — are backdrop. Burdened payroll and frontier replacement cost are the underwrite. Seafood hides people in QA and on the line. Oilfield fab hides them in estimating. Ask for the names that hold the customer when the season peaks.

A Kenai account is not a utilization trade. Leave ISM August 2026 PMI 54.6 and Fed G.17 July 2026 capacity utilization 76.0% in the year file. Stanford medians assume a margin most 20.0-person shops do not print. Staff QoE and the Napkin license file against the BizBuySell 2025 manufacturing median close of 223 days (Source: BizBuySell). That is a staffing clock, not an announcement.
