The hubs are CNC machine shops and metal fabrication. Buy a manufacturing business stays the pillar. Multiples by sub-sector is why the rows stay split. This page is the acquisition scorecard.

Census CBP 2023 counted 284,452 manufacturing establishments; 68.4% have fewer than 20 employees (Source: Census CBP). Both files live in that majority. Identity is still the process, not the NAICS code you like.

How does revenue actually arrive in each shop?

A machine shop lives on RFQs and travelers. Tomorrow’s book is a win-rate and an estimator’s hours. Repeat parts help. They do not become a catalog because the traveler has a part number. Unbilled first-article hours are a peg fight, not décor.

A fabrication shop often lives on projects or releases. Architectural weld books are not commodity brackets. Housing-cycle volume treated as the base year is how a fab file lies. Coil-surcharge clauses that actually move belong in the commercial file. A verbal “we always pass steel through” is not a clause.

Hybrids exist. Score trailing gross profit by process. A shop with two VMCs and a brake is not “a fab” because the website says metal. Weight the mix. Do not borrow the high row.

Which earnings cell does each file inhabit?

Manufacturing business valuation still wants the size band first. This site’s publishing table for owner-operated SDE under $1 million puts general CNC / job shop without a specialty cert at 2.0x–3.6x SDE and commodity metal fabrication at 2.0x–3.5x SDE, both tied to BizBuySell manufacturing quartiles for 2021–2025 (Source: BizBuySell / Iconic). Specialty machining still under $1 million SDE can talk a wider observed 3.0x–5.0x SDE band. Those are advisor-survey / reported-deal ranges, not an appraisal.

The Main Street median in that same BizBuySell set was 2.75x SDE on about $268k of earnings (Source: BizBuySell / Iconic). Use it as gravity. Do not average it with a search print.

Stanford’s 2024–25 search median of about $16 million at ~6.2x EBITDA on a ~25% margin company is not a job-shop law and not a commodity-fab law (Source: Stanford GSB). Do not drop it on either aisle.

What labor and second-chair facts differ?

BLS OEWS May 2025 median pay was $58,750 for machinists and $53,750 for welders (Source: BLS OEWS). A CNC file often dies when the Friday 5-axis programmer still fishes. A fab file often dies when CWI sign-off is a handshake. Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute still flag 3.8 million manufacturing hires needed this decade, with 1.9 million potentially unfilled (Source: Deloitte/MI). Two thin benches do not become one platform because both work metal.

Ask who quotes. On a machine shop the owner is often the estimator. On a fab shop the owner is often the project manager and the customer. Either way you are buying a transition plan if that person is the enterprise.

How should the machine list and the bay be read?

Analyzing the machine list and equipment appraisal wants make, model, year, control, serial, hours if they exist, owned versus leased, and the UCC search. CNC equipment values and useful life is practice color for the machining aisle. Do not publish a 2014 VMC price from a blog.

On the fab aisle, press tonnage and bed size are the real capacity. A 2009 CO2 resonator sold as current fiber is a CIM lie. Crane coverage that hides a rotting pit is an environmental and a real-estate fact. Die ownership versus customer-owned tools is a title fact on stampers.

Orderly liquidation value plus clean net working capital still tests both files. If the floor wins, stop arguing a turn.

What climate sentences apply — and what they do not do?

ISM’s August 2026 PMI printed 54.6 with a Prices Index of 71.1 (Source: ISM). Fed G.17 manufacturing utilization sat at 76.0% in July 2026 (Source: Fed G.17). Use those as CIM weather. They do not add a turn to a commodity brake shop or a walk-in quote desk.

SBA 7(a) still caps at $5 million with a 10% injection (Source: SBA). Either file can fit that box. The cap does not pick the process. IBBA Pulse Q1 2026 found 83% of deals over $5 million drew three or more offers (Source: IBBA). That helps a certified, reportable file. It does not rescue a handshake weld book.

BizBuySell’s 2025 manufacturing median close ran 223 days (Source: BizBuySell). Weld-procedure transfer and first-article quals sit on that calendar. So do CMM stickers without calibration dates.

Who should buy a machine shop?

Choose the CNC column if you can underwrite travelers, unbilled first article, and a programmer bench, and if your buybox is hours and tolerance rather than tons. Choose it if you will pay for a live certificate when access depends on it. Read the CNC hub before you tour.

Refuse the CNC column if you need a catalog SKU, if you will not reconcile JobBOSS to packing lists, or if the only 5-axis person is leaving.

Who should buy a fabrication shop?

Choose the fab column if you can underwrite weld paper, coil or plate truth, crane and pit physics, and a project-versus-release book. Choose it if you will not treat housing-cycle volume as the base year. Read the metal fabrication hub before you tour.

Refuse the fab column if AWS procedures are a handshake, if paint-booth air files are a shrug, or if you came to borrow a machining cell because “it’s all metal.”

A buyer who wants both processes in one building still has to underwrite two books: hours and tons. Job shop versus proprietary product is the model compare. This page stays CNC versus fab as an acquisition. Do not average the two cells because both cut metal.
