Why nameless is the point
Census CBP 2023 counted 284,452 U.S. manufacturing establishments; 68.4% have fewer than 20 employees (Source: Census CBP). On a shop that small, “AS9100 five-axis in a named suburb” is already an address. If you are selling a manufacturing business, write the teaser so a competitor who forwards it still cannot walk the aisle.
How do I keep a sale confidential is the method FAQ. How it works is the sequence: recast, teaser, NDA, CIM, letters. Skip the blind page and you are marketing a rumor.
BizBuySell’s 2025 manufacturing median time to close was 223 days (Source: BizBuySell). That is a long season for a screenshot to travel.
What the first page may say
It may say Midwest precision machining, a size band, ISO or AS category without the audit date that unique-identifies the file, and a recast range. It may not say the legal name, the only-shop-in-the-county line, or a photo of the mural in the break room. It may not quote a multiple. Valuation owns size-band math. Main Street manufacturing in the 2021–2025 BizBuySell set cleared at a 2.75x median SDE (Source: Iconic / BizBuySell). That marker is climate. It is not a teaser promise.
| Teaser line | Allowed? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “Upper Midwest CNC, 15–25 people, ISO shop” | Usually | Region + process + size |
| Recast range without names | Usually | Lets a buyer self-select |
| Legal name or cross-street | No | Identifies the file |
| Customer logos or “only certified shop in X County” | No | A screenshot is a name |
| “Will clear 6x because aerospace” | No | Invented multiple |
What happens after someone replies
They sign an NDA. Then they get the CIM. Then, if they are real, they get names and a scripted visit. A public marketplace listing is optional. If you list, accept screenshots. A $5 million 7(a) buyer still needs a later walk (Source: SBA). The teaser is not that walk.

Can I list publicly and still call the first page blind?
You can write a nameless first page. You cannot unsay a public listing. Screenshots travel. For most manufacturers the default is a quiet buyer list. If inbound matters more than silence, say so in the strategy call and accept the leak risk. Do not pretend a marketplace PDF is still confidential because the legal name sat on page two.
A competitor who replies to a public listing is not a surprise. Treat that reply as high-leakage even after an NDA. Limit the first package. Delay the plant visit. Counsel drafts the NDA.
The first page may say a region, a process family, a size band, and a recast range. It may not say the legal name, the cross-street, or “the only certified shop in the county.” It may not quote a multiple. Valuation owns size-band math. The teaser starts an NDA. The CIM is the NDA room. Names come later. Tours come later still, and never on a customer-audit day.

How it works is the sequence: recast, teaser, NDA, CIM, letters. Skip the blind page and you are marketing a rumor. On a shop where 68.4% of the national file has fewer than 20 employees, a unique process-plus-town sentence is already an address. Write the first page so a competitor who forwards it still cannot walk the aisle. The 223-day manufacturing median is a long season for a screenshot to travel. Accept that clock or accept the leak. Do not pretend you can have both.
Allowed lines are region, process family, size band, and a recast range. Forbidden lines are the legal name, the cross-street, customer logos, and an invented multiple. A public listing is a screenshot. You can still write a nameless first page. You cannot unsay the listing.
How it works is recast, teaser, NDA, CIM, then letters. The first page may show a recast range. It may not quote 2.75x as a promise. That BizBuySell median is climate for Main Street SDE shops. It is not a teaser warranty. A $5 million 7(a) buyer still needs a later walk. The teaser is not that walk. Counsel still drafts the NDA.
A competitor who replies is not a surprise. Limit the first package. Delay the plant visit. Keep names out until the CIM ring, and logos out until later still. Census still shows most manufacturers under 20 employees, so uniqueness is the leak. Write the first page so a forwarded PDF cannot walk the aisle. Accept the 223-day rumor window or accept the leak. Do not pretend you can have both on a public listing. The teaser starts an NDA. It is not the plant walk and not the CIM. Keep the legal name off page one.
